Visa Considerations

The two main options for tourists in Thailand (from the US) are to either come with NO visa, in which case you’ll be auto given a 30 day entry visa with a 500 baht per extra day fine. The second option is to come with a 60 day tourist visa which you’ll have to apply for ahead of time. Im not sure how much it costs but you’ll have to go to an embassy to get it (NYC of SF) or hire a company to take care of the processing for you. So your next question might be – what if I want to stay for 90 days? Well, then you do one of the infamous “Visa Runs”. Options abound since both flights and boats are rather cheap and countries are close by. The most frequent flight options usually take a person to Singapore or Kuala Lampur and possibly Ho Chi Mihn (I opted for KL). Your passport is stamped, your exit visa is taken care of, then when you reenter Thailand your 30 (or 60) days starts over again. Read the rest of this entry »

What NOT to Bring to Thailand…

Here is a list of what you don’t need to bring to Thailand because its dirt cheap to buy it here. My thinking on a lot of this is that, why bring the $50 pair of sandals that’ll you’ll cry over if you loose, when you can buy some for $3.50 and not only save room in your suitcase on the way there, but toss them before you leave and have more room for presents? Plus, anytime you visit a 3rd world country you want to be sure you don’t have too many valuable on your person. They don’t “impress” anyone, they just entice thieves. Well, without further ado… Read the rest of this entry »

An Overview of the First Week

Looking back over the first week I’ve already learned how I could do it better next time, and of course which parts I’d repeat. Assuming I’d still be coming to learn Muay Thai I’d probably set it like this: Read the rest of this entry »

Some thoughts on Bangkok

Expect to be in a perpetual sweat during your stay in Thailand. Wear clothes that won’t bother you when damp.

Bangkok’s smog will most likely kill you before any stomach bugs or bloodless coups.

Expect some of the best food you’ve ever tasted, dirt cheap EVERYTHING, and probably one of the best times of your life.

Ride a tuk tuk. Sure you might develop lung cancer in the short ride between the Grand Palace and ‘Gem Palace’, but I promise the over-priced high pressure gem shopping is worth it… oh wait, its not, but you just earned your driver a free gas voucher!

It really is a blast of a city. There are enough touristy annoyances that I would not make my home there, but as a destination Bangkok should certainly make the top 10, and probably Thailand as a whole. I’ll let you know more about Phuket soon.
