Forced into Advanced Class…

Somebody put the bullet in me, finish me off, I’m not quite dead. So I know I said I wouldn’t go to advanced, and if they hadn’t pushed me up there I wouldn’t have! It was as tough as I thought it would be. People sparred easy with me, so I didn’t get whacked around too much there, but clinching was another story along with the other drills they had us doing (including pushing the punching bag while they round house kicked us in the gut – awesome).

They probably won’t see me for at least a week in that class. I’m going to go back to intermediate on Monday, and I’m also taking the next few days off because I’m doing a visa run/mini-vacation to Kuala Lampur. Hopefully they’ll take me back at intermediate :) I think they only pushed me up because they were running out of room with all the new fighters showing up.

Ridiculous Offer to go to Advanced…

Yesterday one of the instructors told me to go up to advanced on Monday. Obviously, I’m flattered, but Monday is sparring day – they must think I’m insane! Plus I’m still healing from the beating I took the first day since I just got nailed again today in the same place.

I think I’ll stay in intermediate for a couple more weeks…

Upgraded!

Good news and bad news. First, the good news is today at training the bumped me from beginner to intermediate. I had originally started at beginner both because I hadn’t trained for almost 6 months, and because my training is actually more grounded in American Kickboxing than Muay Thai. There are enough subtle differences to warrant going over the basics for a week before jumping up to real sparring  matches, which actually leads me to my piece of bad news. In sparring today I got pummeled. Hard. It was a good learning experience definitely, but at the price of getting dropped after a huge left hook to the gut knocked the wind out of me. My nose is a little sore too, but not broken. Anyhow, I figured my pain might be entertainment for at least a few readers out there :) I’ll be sure to take pictures if I get any other injuries that show up a different color.

Full Moon Party

Sorry, this post is so delayed, we’ve had some internet problems and I’ve been busy with training and beach-hopping. First, let me explain what a Full Moon party is since I assume most people haven’t heard of it officially – I hadn’t heard about it either until just before coming to Thailand. As the name implies, it takes place the night of the full moon which is typically once a month. The “Official” party takes place just south of Bangkok in what I’ve been told is the sleaziest city in Thailand and a real hot spot for backpackers looking to party. I’ve read some forum posts on the party and its apparently loads of fun and complete madness (as one would expect with thousands of backpackers from around the globe converging for the sole purpose of partying for 10 hours straight)… Well I didn’t attend THAT party, but our camp through their own mini-party in its honor. First Training Session of Muay Thai

Nit. This was the single hardest work out I think I’ve ever done. Granted it was after another difficult (though comparably easy) workout in the morning, and the camp recommends only doing one class a day for the first week, but I was seriously put to shame. I can barely walk (my calves are cramped beyond belief) and my feet are torn up. I consumed just about a gallon of water for that ONE work out! When I was done it looked like I had showered for 10 minutes in my clothes. Read the rest of this entry »
